Dear Learned Sanmarga Ayyas,
I live abroad. I am a Trainee Sanmargi (stopped eating pulal after I lost my father but need to fully observe all other virtues). My father breathed his last last year. My relatives want me to visit India for first death anniversary rituals. One say it should be held on date of departure and another say that it should be based on thithi of hindu calendar. I generally dont follow or believe in all these rituals but I have full respect and reverence to my dear father. I daily pray to Tiruvarutprakasa Vallalar to make my father a great Suththa Sanmargi in his next birth so that he attains Maranamilla Peruvazhvu.
I read or heard somewhere that our Lord Vallalar seemed to have advised against following such rituals as those things or offerings do not reach departed souls. Learned Sanmarga experts may kindly advice me on the course of action I should follow. With advanced gratitudes, Kanagasabai Ramalingam

As for the first anniversary, we observed it as per the 'THITHI' date (as instructed by the Sanmarka Chief of our town) and we had Agaval Parayanam and other things related to remembrance on that day. We also donated for Annathanam both on the thithi date as well as on the English date.
Though nothing that we offer in ceremonies would reach the departed souls, at least for the sake of our loved ones as well as for the society, we would be forced to do certain things. If we do these things in a simpler and meaning way, then it wont be a problem.
