ADDITON TO ANAIYA ADUPPU AT VADALUR DHARMASALAI .
Vallal Perumanar opened Dharmasalai with total compassion on the poor who suffer in starvation. He advocated daily feeding of the poor all 24 hours a day. For this purpose Perumanar put up an oven of conventional type in 1867. The fire of the oven which Perumanar lit with his own hands is still glowing continuously without any break during the last 142 years,feeding every 0ne who comes to Dharmasala for food. This original conventional ovenstarted by Perumanar is in the photograph below.

As the number of peoplewho come for food increased, the ancient oven has become insufficient to meet the increasing demands. So a long pit oven was constructed by the side of the original oven and fire from the old one was transferred to this new oven. Feeding continues day by day in a big way as swamy visualized.
The new long pit oven is shown in the photographs . Both the ovens are put up side by side.

As days progressed even this long pit oven was not sufficient to prepare food to meet the demand. On festive days it was very difficult to manage. At this stage, Vallalar’s devotees M/S. L.Balasundara Raju and Sitrarasu of Malaysia in consultation with Imayajothi Thirugnananantha Swamigal, founder of Gnanalaya Vallalar Kottam came forward to donate and alter the infrastructure required in a modern way. With the guidance of Imayajothi Swamigal the trustees worked out the details of modern equipment required and suggested renovation of the existing kitchen without disturbing the present ovens and the 142 years old fire lit by Perumanar.
The donars have planned and installed 4 steam cookers with a steam boiler of modern technology to cook rice and for repairing and painting of the kitchen. This new range of modern equipment was installed in a separate location in the kitchen.Both Mr.L.Balasundara Raju and Mr.Sitrarasu came from Malaysia with their family and stayed in Vadalur to install the equipment. Cost of the entire project including renovation is about three and a half lakh of repees. The new cookers and boiler are shown below.

Earlier all food items were prepared in the long pit oven itself. This consumed a lot of time especially during the festival days when large number of devotees turned out. This new range of equipment is an addition and is placed a little away from the old ovens. This steam cookers are meant for cooking rice only. Capacity of all the four cookers together is 100 kgs. of rice every ten minutes. This modern equipment reduces cooking time enormously. Physical strain on the kitchen staff is substantially reduced. People who take part in this AnnaDhanam also feel happy over quick service.

Steam cookers are used for rice cooking, whereas the long pit oven is run as usual to prepareitemsSambar,Rasam,vegetables,payasam, sweets etc The fire lit by our Perumanar’s own hands was earlier shifted to the long pit oven many years back and continued without a break.Thus this furnace is called by devotees as ‘ ANAIYA ADUPPU’.

The steam boiler is run by a furnace using firewood only. So as and when steam cookers are to be used, the fire from the long pit oven will be taken out to light firewood of the boiler furnce. In future along with the long pit oven the 4 steam cookers will be used for preparing food. The authorities concerned and the kitchen staff take all care to maintain the fire lit by Periumanar’s own hands 142 years ago. The entire kitchen renovated and neatly painted is shown in the photos below.

Inagural function of this project of adding extra range of equipment was held on 1-1-09.Before starting this project, the entire plan was submitted in every detail to the authorities and members concerned with Vadalur Daiva Nilayam and to the Hindu Religious Endowment Board for approval and permission in advance and the same obtained.
The inaugural function was celebrated in a fitting manner and well attended by large number of V.I.Ps and devotees from all places. Besides Imayajothi Thirugnananantha Swamigal-founder of Gnanalaya Vallalar Kottam,Sekar Swamigal,ooran Adigal,Thiru Ramalingam- President of the Trust,Trustee Thiru Vijayakumar along with V.I.Ps of Vadalur M/S.Sooryamoorthy, Ravichandran, Ramanujam, Rajangam,Radhakrishnan,Anandan,Daiva Nilayam accuntantant Thiru Gnanaprakasam,Sanmargis Thiru Ramachandran,and Thiru J.Krishnamoorthy,and many others graced the function. Thousands of Sanmargis and devotees participated and got blessings of Vakllalar. In the presence of this divine gathering,Gnanasabai chief priest Krishmoorthy Swamigal performed the main pooja and aarthi. The steam boiler furnace was lit by him taking the first fire from Anaiya Aduppu fire lit by Perumanar 142 years ago. Both the long pit ovenand the steam boiler furnace will continue to function in future.Pooja ceremony photos are shown below.
